In almost every reality TV show, there is always a “mad black woman ” There is always a black girl who seems incredibly out of control. she always starts a fight and takes every thing personally. Does the media intentionally edit these shows and make these black girls seem over the top or are black girls typically bitches.
For example, in the first season of “The Apprentice’, there was vicious Omarosa. she was perceived as the direct, sometimes rude and no nonense lady who every one was scared of.
Yesterday, as I was watching the season premiere of “The Bachelor“. There was one black girl out of all the contestants. During the show she kept on insulting people and was ready to start a fight with one of the girls. As the show continued, she wasn’t chosen by the bachelor (Andy Baldwin) and she literally threw a tantrum. She started insuting the show and the bachelor’s choices. All i kept thinking was “oh no not the mad black woman again” I really wonder does the media over play the “black bitch’ aspect or are black girls typically aggresive? Take a look at this article which tries to address this issue. it offers interesting points
I think some Africans Americans are definitely over aggressive, however I still do think think that the media does overreact to make an extra buck. So its a catch 22. I think both parties play a role in the portrait of a “mad black woman”
African Americans and everyone else who had been oppressed by the Europeans and other majority communities reserve the right to be more aggressive. We have been oppressed hence we will not like anyone putting us down in any way. That is natural.
Wouldn’t you show your self as strong, if you had been thought as weak and had been bullied etc.
I think that there are a vast amount of black people are brought up in areas some might like to call ‘ghetto’ areas. These usually entail a so- called black way of living, for some people this may entail being tough and defensive! Some may not realise how agressive they are as they may be used to it around them. I do not believe that all black women are aggressive as it depend i think on your community and up bringing! And not all black people are brought up the same!
((dont know if this makes sense as I was writing off the top of my head))
Me and a friend of mine was talking about this the other day and quite frankly im sick of it.
With all the negativity towards black women in rap music and pushing these crazy black women forward in reality shows like these only portrays us as PARONOID, ANGRY, VICIOUS, AND DOWN RIGHT BULLIES to the rest of the world.
Me and plenty of my black female friends dont carry on in this way.
Whenever people start to make generalizations about a subgroup, then that is an indicator that you support stereotypes about people without knowing them personally. This crosses the line of racism. I’ve seen “ghetto” or “trailer park” White girls who were bitchy and angry and defensive. You see them all the time on Jerry Springer, but for some reason people only seem to remember the “angry Black girl” because this fits into their little stereotypes about Black girls. Race doesn’t define ones personality, but I would say a lot of it has to do with poverty and education and family upbringing. True, some Blacks do grow up in “ghettos” but what about the ones living in the suburbs with both parents who are professionals that support their families. I’m tired of negative stereotypes defining who we are as a race. Also, I stopped watching The Bachelor years ago because the show if obviously set up so that the token Black girl doesn’t make it past first draft. If she did, all of White America would be in an uproar. This show is planned and scripted just like American Idol. And Flava of Love is a ridiculous mess that needs to be taken off air. This is the worst depiction of women in general.
Thank you for your blog post. I do not like stereotypes. To say all black people are over agressive is just wrong. We all should know that the media plays a BIG role in influencing the way we think not just about this topic but about anything.
I no longer watch more than an hour on t.v. bcuz of this very reason. This rule was set by my mom when I was sixteen. After watching t.v. as a teen and being able to process messages and complex issues without the maturity of an adult my mom noticed a change in my mentality. I was angry at home but scared to death to go outside. I had to look perfect anywhere we went or I melted down to the panic driven bitchfest of the century that teenage girls are known for anyway. anorexic and alcoholic. Mean and scary at the same time makes for extreme hatred for self and others. I was very race defensive if anyone said or did anything to me it was b-cuz i’m a blck girl. At the flip side of the coin I said worse and did worse to my mom then ever was done to me. I told my mom i hated her, i called her half african whore, nappy bitch, i even told her my ancestors were weak and i would never help a slave get freedom because they deserved it. But I hated whites too and myself and girls and boys I had developed a real persecution complex. It “does exsist” it’s when people believe everyone is out to destroy them or their people personally. I got better thankfully b-cuz my mom; a smart beautiful black woman refused to give up on me. some people just need help and t.v. doesn’t help. With shows like realworld where black girls get cussed out by white guys every new season that one is in the cast. Or never make it past round one on miss america or the bachelor, Mtv’s yo mama so black jokes, rap videos, big brother where the darkest girl is first to leave or be ostricized, movies that portray ghetto black baby mamas she fine be that jezebel is tryflin’ stereotypes or fat black kick yo ass bitch. And did i mention rappers? Yes, i had developed mental health issues who wouldn’t. the positive side of this is that i’m much better now and we all should watch less t.v. it’s literally better for your health.
I think that, thats was everyone excepts that black women are bitches. So reality shows cast for the “mad black woman” for ratings. Also if they dont find one they make one by editing. Theres nothing wrong with a woman with an opinion. But when the editing makes her the bitch of the show then thats wrong.
Side note: Black women had to be strong/opinionated to survive for themselves and for their family. Someone had to make ends meet. Those that didnt like how aggressive they were titled them the bitch/mad black woman.
i think personally because of the past that has been portrayed by white people black people have been considered to be mad angry etc As a black child I try not to portray these visiions as they only drag your self-asteem. What message do they push forward to future kids if rasicm is shown i the media
ALSO
on posters in Central London they never show black people but when it comes to:
FREE FAMILY SUNDAYS they show a black person
or:
NO GUNS
Only negative views are shown upon black people.
What do you expect if white people are racist?
Well not all white people.
I agree with the above.
whats the difference between white and black?
different hair type
different lip size
more pigment
what do these things have to do with pesonal
its stupid if you ask me!
Uh. Omarosa. I hated her personally. Not because she’s black or anything but her attitude. Or did someone pay her to act like that on The Apprentice? Just to ’spice’ things up a bit get more viewing hits from the audiences?
i do not believe they paid her. I think she is just like that which is not bad
Um, whomever wrote this should have proofread before publishing. So that makes this article not only ignorant, but also “ignit.”
Oh, and by the way, I LOVE Omarosa’s personality. She isn’t overtly aggressive or bitchy…she’s just a strong black woman and that’s awesome.
‘are black girls typically aggresive?’
Um… that’s a well racist question.
